All relationships require us to grow closer to the other person. When we are small, we learn to love and grow closer to our parents. As we age, we grow closer to our friends, and then we start to grow closer to the other sex. Then we meet our soul mate, and we grow close to them. After marriage, we start a family and then grow close to the precious life given to us.
Life is full of relationships which require us to grow and draw nearer to the person. If our relationships never grow, we are like a plant that is never watered – it will surely die.
God is no different. We must spend time talking, reading, mediating, being silent and listening to draw closer to Him. If we do not draw nearer to God, our spiritually life will die like a plant not watered. We need God to Feed and Water us so we can become stronger and nearer to Him.
God’s relationship should be the foundation of all relationships. If we are close and near to God, our other relationships with our spouses, children, parents, siblings, co-workers, church family and friends will be better. We learn from God what it takes to draw nearer to other people, when we are drawing nearer to Him.
James 4:8 says “Draw near to God and He will draw near to you. Cleanse your hands, you sinners; and purify your hearts, you double-minded” (NIV 1984). Hebrews 10:22 says, “Let us draw near to God with a sincere heart in full assurance of faith, having our hearts sprinkled to cleanse us from a guilty conscience and having our bodies washed with pure water” (NIV 1984).
Take time everyday to draw nearer to God and in turn your other relationships will blossom. Remember the hymn, “Draw Me Nearer”. Take time to sing and meditate on these words and see if you do not draw nearer to the one and only, God!!!!
1 I am Thane, O Lord, I have heard Thy voice,
And it told Thy love to me;
But I long to rise in the arms of faith
And be closer drawn to Thee.
Draw me nearer, nearer blessed Lord,
To the cross where Thou hast died;
Draw me nearer, nearer, nearer blessed Lord,
To Thy precious, bleeding side.
2 Consecrate me now to Thy service, Lord,
By the pow’r of grace divine;
Let my soul look up with a steadfast hope,
And my will be lost in Thine. [Refrain]
3 Oh, the pure delight of a single hour
That before Thy throne I spend,
When I kneel in prayer, and with Thee, my God
I commune as friend with friend! Refrain]
4 There are depths of love that I cannot know
Till I cross the narrow sea;
There are heights of joy that I may not reach
Till I rest in peace with Thee. [Refrain]
