A Thankful Heart

Colossians 4:2 (NLT). Devote yourselves to prayer with an alert mind and a thankful heart.

When you are a small child, you have many toys. You have a favorite toy you play with everyday until your grandparents take you shopping. You find something that is so much better than what you have. You then ask and sometimes beg until they buy. After going home you play with the new toy and the old toy you loved is put into the toy box never to be seen again. The new toy is your favorite until you go shopping again and find something better.

Adults are no different. We want something so bad then we get it. Within a few months or weeks or sometimes days we grow tired of it and want something else. We soon forget about this old thing and only can think of the new thing.

God gives us blessings everyday. Some blessings are from the day before we are allowed to keep. On special days he graces us with new blessings. There are even times we are blessed with blessings we know nothing about.

Do you ever have a thankful heart to God when you are praying??

In the verse today, we are to pray. It states to devote ourselves to prayer. We are not like the Jews bound to pray at certain times, however, we are to pray. Not only pray, but devote ourselves to prayer. We devote our lives to a job or a family or sometimes to things we shouldn’t. Here it clearly states to devote ourselves to prayer. How much? How little? How often? I believe that is up to the Christian and the Holy Spirit in moving in their lives.

So when we pray how should we pray ~ with an alert mind. How many times do you start to pray and your mind begins drifting? You think about what you have to do, what you have done, and how hungry you are. An alert mind while praying is one ready to listen for God to speak not one listening to the outside world. I know this is very hard and takes practice and more prayer. But I know if we persevere we can succeed.

While you are devoting to prayer with an alert mind, do not forget to be thankful. Can you imagine how God feels when we are always asking for so much and never thanking Him for what He has already blessed us with?  Imagine how you would feel if you kept being asked to do things and never being thanked for what you have already done? Okay if you are a mom, there may be some days you already feel this way. So how does it make you feel ~ unappreciated, unloved, and ungrateful for? Should God feel any less? Maybe the reason God isn’t answering a prayer for something is because we haven’t thanked Him for the last blessing.

We can’t help to ask for things or blessings. The writer in Psalm 119:58 writes, “With all my heart I want your blessings. Be merciful as you promised.”  We want His blessings ~ everyone wants God’s blessings ~ with all our heart.

So does it upset God if we do not have a thankful heart?  It is no different than when you give someone a present and they do not say “Thank you”.  You are upset because you gave them a present from the heart but they did not have a thankful heart.

Are you giving thanks with a grateful heart for prayers that have been answered?  Today while you are praying make a point with your alert mind to thank God for some blessings. Decide to start a prayer journal as well as a blessings journal. Make it a point to write at least 3 things you are thankful for each day.

2 Corinthians 1:11 (NLT). …Then many people will give thanks because God has graciously answered so many prayers…

Have a more thankful heart for God’s many blessings.  You may see you have more to be thankful for than you ever could have imagined.  You may begin being a more thankful person who shares their blessings with others.
