Forgiveness

Ephesians 4:32

Be kind and compassionate to one another, forgiving each other, just as in Christ God forgave you.

During my quiet time yesterday morning, I read a devotion from Charles Stanley and it was referring to forgiveness and the above verse.  Later in the day, I was finishing up my study on the Keep It Shut book.  In the last chapter, Karen Ehman references this verse as well. (Insert Shock Face).

Well, I’m thinking I have seen this twice, so is someone trying to tell me something??? (HMMMMMM)

Okay!  I’m listening!  You have my attention LORD!!

During our Proverbs 31 Online Bible Study, our daily blog post on Wednesday was teaching us a new Bible Study Skill – Verse Mapping.  I had been taught this before, but Sarah Travis put a twist on it.  (Click here if you would like to watch her video).  I felt being led that this is the verse I should do verse mapping with so I listened.  (I know imagine that.)

The verse is so full of information and a GREAT promise.  God has forgave us through Christ being born of a virgin, walking on this earth as a sinless human being but dying for us (YOU and ME) who are full of sin by being crucified on a cross – a painful punishment.

  • FORGIVENESS – such a small word for such a BIG PROMISE AND PUNISHMENT.

Now, what do we need to do in exchange for his promised forgiveness?  It’s so easy.  It’s such a simple request.  It’s something that should not be a problem to do. We should forgive others.

STOP THE PRESS!!  Forgive others that’s not easy.  That’s not a simple request.  That is very hard to do. Think about all these people who need to forgive someone for something they have done that is horrible.

  • The young girl who was molested by a close family member or friend.
  • The children whose father walked out on them when they were young leaving them scorn.
  • The wife or husband that has been beaten multiple times by their spouse.
  • The couple whose 17 year old son was killed by a drunk driver.
  • The husband whose wife has been unfaithful and committed adultery.
  • The 17 year old girl about to go off to college who found her father bleeding to death after a gunshot wound to chest to try and kill himself.

I could go on and on and on but I will stop there.

Does this verse mean no matter what the person has done we are to forgive the other person?

YES!!!

WHY???

Because God forgives us for our sin.

But I have never killed anyone or committed adultery or done anything that bad.

But you have committed sin.  Any sin no matter what, is sin no matter how small – lying, speaking harshly to another person, coveting others.

UH OH!!

It’s easy to say you forgive someone, however, have you forgave them in your heart.  When they do something else to you, does the anger from the past issue cause you to be angry?  Saying the word “I Forgive You” is more than just speaking words.  It is an intentional mind and heart change as well.  Your heart and mind have to believe you have truly forgiven the person.

Colossians 3:13. (NIV)

13 Be gentle and ready to forgive; never hold grudges. Remember, the Lord forgave you, so you must forgive others.

Don’t you think it’s hard for God to forgive us over and over and over and over and over?  Yes.  But HE does it and HE wants to do it.  He does it from the heart and mind.  He wants you to forgive someone who does wrong to you so you will not be punished for it.

Luke 6:37. (NIV)

37 “Do not judge, and you will not be judged. Do not condemn, and you will not be condemned. Forgive, and you will be forgiven.

Matthew 6:15.  (NIV)

15 But if you do not forgive others their sins, your Father will not forgive your sins.

Jesus walked on this earth and shed His blood on the cross for our sins.  He gave more than we could ever give someone.

Matthew 26:28. (NIV)

28 This is my blood of the[a] covenant, which is poured out for many for the forgiveness of sins.

Now, I will be the first one to say, “No it’s not easy to forgive.”  But Jesus has told us we must do it.  We can only forgive because we know Jesus forgives us and HE will give us the strength we need.

Is there someone today you need to forgive?

Do you need to ask God for forgiveness?

There is no better time than now.  We do not know when Jesus is coming back and you do not want that to stop you from spending eternity with Him.

So pray a little prayer and ask God to give you the strength and Just Do It!!!!  You will feel so much better when you do.
