Why Worry? Because…….. No, Don’t Worry!

Matthew 6.27

Do you worry?  Do you worry about your children at school?  Do you worry about the future?  Do you worry about how to provide for your family?  Do you worry about your health?  Do you worry about what others think of you?

I could go on and on and on and on!

We all worry some.  Others worry more than others.  I would say on a scale of 1 to 10, 1 being the least worrier and 10 the worst, I would fall around 7 to 8.  I am saved.  I do believe in God.  I do believe Jesus Christ came and died for me, but…… yes I worry.

Why worry?

Matthew 6:25 (NIV) 25 “Therefore I tell you, do not worry about your life, what you will eat or drink; or about your body, what you will wear. Is not life more than food, and the body more than clothes?
Matthew 6:27-28 (NIV) 27 Can any one of you by worrying add a single hour to your life[e]?  28 “And why do you worry about clothes? See how the flowers of the field grow. They do not labor or spin.
Matthew 6:34 (NIV) 34 Therefore do not worry about tomorrow, for tomorrow will worry about itself. Each day has enough trouble of its own.

In Matthew 6, Jesus explains to us not to worry about anything and why.  He let’s us know that there is more to life than food and clothes.  He let’s us know that worrying will not add time to your life – because He already knows what your future holds.  Jesus let’s us know why worry about the future, today has enough to think about.

Sometimes I believe it’s not that we don’t believe it’s that we like control.  When we stop worrying and give our troubles and concerns to someone else we lose control and we do not like to give up our control.  God made us the way we are.  He wants us to have some control,  but do not have control of the things HE controls.  He has our back. He doesn’t need our help.  He created everything and we think HE can’t help us!  Really!!

Matthew 6:26 (NIV)  26 Look at the birds of the air; they do not sow or reap or store away in barns, and yet your heavenly Father feeds them. Are you not much more valuable than they?
Matthew 6:30 (NIV)  30 If that is how God clothes the grass of the field, which is here today and tomorrow is thrown into the fire, will he not much more clothe you—you of little faith?

He also tells us in Matthew 6, why we should not worry.   He provides for the birds so don’t you think He will provide for us.  God created us in His own likeness (Gen 1:26-27).   He clothes the grass of the fields, so will HE not clothe the man He created as well.  God loves us and promises in His Word to provide.  He never made a promise to anyone that He did not keep.

Worry just adds more heartache and anxiety to our life.  When we worry, we are only hurting ourselves.  God tells us to pray and be thankful and give all our requests to Him.  He will handle for us.

Philippians 4:6 (NIV) Do not be anxious about anything, but in every situation, by prayer and petition, with thanksgiving, present your requests to God.

I’ll be the first to admit I worry.  I worry over stupid things and I worry over more serious things.  The time and agony I am causing myself is time I am taking from enjoying my life here and now.  Since I have been out of work, there have been months I worry about my families financial stability. BUT every time the LORD has provided.   I worry about my son, but God gave Him to me and my son is ultimately God’s.  So, I should trust God with my son.  I worry about the future, but why?  I don’t even know if there is a future.  I just have this moment right in front of me so why not make the most of it.

As the old song goes, “Don’t Worry, Be Happy!”  I actually think God may have written this song many years before it was really brought to music.

If you find yourself worrying about something, Stop, Pray and Let the Lord have it.  He wants you to live happy lives and spread His Word.  He will handle the small, the medium and the big things because HE is bigger and stronger than we will ever be!

Let’s all work on not worrying and instead pray!  There is nothing to be gained from worrying and everything from praying and laying our worries at His feet!
