How Determined Are You?

Determined

How determined are you at your career?  Are you wanting to move ahead and make as much money and gain as much prestige as possible?  How determined are you to make your marriage work?  Are you willing to sacrifice whatever it takes to make the other person happy?  How determined are you to have the biggest house, the nicest car, the best of the best?

It seems the world is preoccupied with being determined to get as much as we can and to have as much as we can.   The world doesn’t care if you hurt someone along the way.  The world doesn’t care if you have to do something not right to get what you want.

What does the world think about you being determined about God?

How determined are you to raise children who worship God?  How determined are you to share God’s love at work? How determined are you to go to church on Sunday’s?  How determined are you to pray in public?  How determined are you to stand up for the Lord?  Are we as determined at these items as we are the worldly items we have determination for?

A few weeks ago we celebrated Easter.  As you know, Easter is celebrated as the time when Jesus was crucified and then three days later rose from the dead.  He suffered and shed His blood for all of us – not for Himself.  Now, are we that determined?

Luke 9:51 (NIV).  As the time approached for him to be taken up to heaven, Jesus resolutely set out for Jerusalem.

I was looking up determined in my Bible index and came across this verse.  It did not have determined, but it had the word resolutely, which means “firmly resolved or determined; set in purpose or opinion” on dictionary.com.  I’ll be honest with you, I have never used resolutely for determined but it sounds so much more stronger.  It sounds like its the resolution, the result.  It sounds like something bolder.

Jesus knew it was time to go to Jerusalem and it wasn’t for a party, or for money, or for a new house, or for a new car.  It was to be crucified.  Knowing this, He still went determined.  He still went resolutely.

  • How determined are you to spread God’s Word now?
  • How determined are you to be a servant for God now?
  • How determined are you to wash someone’s feet now?
  • How determined are you to pray for others out loud now?

I’m not saying we should not be determined to be a success at work or school, BUT we should have just as much determination to be a person after God’s heart as well.  We should be just as determined to work for God and be a success. We should be just as determined to spread His Word.

I’m determined!  Will you join me and be determined as well.

 Psalm 119:29-31  New Living Translation (NLT)

29 Keep me from lying to myself;
    give me the privilege of knowing your instructions.
30 I have chosen to be faithful;
    I have determined to live by your regulations.
31 I cling to your laws.
    Lord, don’t let me be put to shame!

 Psalm 119:111-113 New Living Translation (NLT)

111 Your laws are my treasure;
    they are my heart’s delight.
112 I am determined to keep your decrees
    to the very end.

    Great post! Very much something for us to all think about and to resolve to be more determined for God. These worldly things will still be here long after we are gone. It is all about perspective.
