Sow righteousness for yourselves,
reap the fruit of unfailing love,
and break up your unplowed ground;
for it is time to seek the Lord,
until he comes
and showers his righteousness on you.
I live in the country and it seems like every afternoon I’m headed to pick up my son or go to the grocery store I get behind a tractor. Now, do not take this as I am complaining because I love the country. I ride by fields and see tractors plowing them, then there are fields that already have the crops planted, and then their still fields that have not been planted in yet.
Farmers have a huge job. They are in charge of making sure they plow the land where it will yield the most crop for them. Farmers have to fertilize the crops and keep them watered if there is not enough rain. Then when it is time, they must harvest the crop before they die or get too old.
You been farming long?
I have seen this picture during my life a thousand times, but when I thought about it today it was in a different way. Farming is not much different than being a Christian and walking as Christ would like us to walk. In the verses in Hosea, it paints a picture of fields and crops but in comparison to a Christians walk.
Sow on dictionary.com means “
The one difference in farming and being a Christian is it is done at a certain time of the year. Almananc’s are wrote so farmer’s know the best time to plant by the moon. We know when the best time to plant the seeds are as well. The bible tells us over and over. IT IS TIME!!! IT IS NOW!!!! We have the bible to tell us about our Father and Jesus coming back but unlike the Almanac it does not have a precise time. As a result we must be planting and sowing all year round, every day, every hour.
How does this apply to me? I’m not a farmer. I’m not planning on growing anything, I buy my stuff at the market.
Well all of us are farmers!!! Yep, you are a farmer for God. We are all farmers.
We must plow our ground and break it up. This means to try and get rid of all the weeds which are the sins in our life. Just like the fields have to be plowed every year and during the crops early growth period, we may have to cut our sin many times. We are not perfect. God knows that. We need to strive to be plowing our ground daily and removing the problems and weeds that cause the sin.
We need to sow seeds. We need to not only plant seeds of fruit in our lives but also in others. God has made each of us. He made each of us for a purpose. He has given each of us specific seeds to plant and we need to make sure we plant them and not save them up. Our time here on this earth may come to an end before we plant any or some of the seeds.
We will receive something from the plowing of our fields and sowing the seeds. We will reap a crop. A crop of fruit of unfailing love from God which is the best crop result we could ever produce. Not only do we receive His unfailing love, we will receive His showers of righteousness on us. Imagine when you were young playing outside on a warm day. All of sudden, a rain storm came up. It rained not hard but just a shower where you could run around in it and get wet. We would hold our tongues out and try to drink it. We would just love the nice cool water from the shower.
Guess what. The Lord’s showers of water will be better than that. That will be the water from the eternal one. The Holy water and the only water that will not make us thirst no more!
Now let me ask this question again.
You been farming long? Are you a farmer? Will you be one of God’s farmers? Will you go out and plow the weeds, sow the seeds and receive the unfailing love He wants to shower you with when the time comes???
