23 Then he got into the boat and his disciples followed him. 24 Suddenly a furious storm came up on the lake, so that the waves swept over the boat. But Jesus was sleeping. 25 The disciples went and woke him, saying, “Lord, save us! We’re going to drown!”
26 He replied, “You of little faith, why are you so afraid?” Then he got up and rebuked the winds and the waves, and it was completely calm.
When I was little, my parents room was beside mine. It never failed, if a bad storm came up – thunder and lightning – I would go jump in the bed with my parents. I would then feel safe. Once the storm was over, my parents would send me back to my room.
Isn’t it funny when a child is scared they run to their parents. This isn’t something we teach them is it?
When a small child feels threatened or sees a stranger they do not know, they run to one of their parents.
When they get hurt or fall, they run to one of their parents.
I was no different. I ran to my parents when the storm came up – they made me feel safe.
In today’s verses, God is sleeping, resting. In the Message it reads, “he was sound asleep!” The disciples, however, were not sound asleep.
They were scared.
They were troubled.
They were not resting.
The comparison to rest here I want to show you is this, Jesus knew God would keep Him safe so He slept – rested. The disciples, however, were not sleeping, resting, even though they had Jesus with them. They could not rest, they were scared.
Who did they run to? They ran to Jesus. Jesus reprimanded them. He told them they had little faith to rest. They were too worried. Then Jesus calmed the waters. (I think He calmed the waters, because He knew from past experiences, they would keep worrying Him.) They had little faith to rest in Jesus.
Aren’t we the same way?
Shouldn’t we run to Jesus when we lay awake at night and can’t sleep, rest?
Shouldn’t we run to Jesus when are minds are causing us not to sleep, rest?
I know we can’t actually run to Him, but we can all to Him.
We can speak to Him.
We can pray to Him.
Are you going to The Lord for your rest? If not, please do. He will always be there!!!
