Have you ever had anything done for you because of who you are? Have you been shown favor by someone else before?
The story of Joseph in Genesis is a very heartwarming story. If you have never read it, please do so (here is the link). Now talk about someone hitting the lottery not once but several times, this was Joseph.
Joseph was shown favor from the Pharoah because of the Lord.
Joseph’s brothers sold him because they could not stand him. He was a little arrogant but he had dreams and he knew how to interpret them. He just didn’t realize telling his brothers would make them so jealous. The brothers sold Joseph to the Midianites who in turned sold him in Egypt to one of Pharoah’s officials.
But of course the brothers thought they were doing harm to their brother.
Genesis 39:2 NIV
The Lord was with Joseph so that he prospered, and he lived in the house of his Egyptian master.
The Pharoah saw the Lord’s favor on Joseph.
Genesis 39:3-6 (NIV)
3 When his master saw that the Lord was with him and that the Lord gave him success in everything he did, 4 Joseph found favor in his eyes and became his attendant. Potiphar put him in charge of his household, and he entrusted to his care everything he owned. 5 From the time he put him in charge of his household and of all that he owned, the Lord blessed the household of the Egyptian because of Joseph. The blessing of the Lord was on everything Potiphar had, both in the house and in the field. 6 So Potiphar left everything he had in Joseph’s care; with Joseph in charge, he did not concern himself with anything except the food he ate.
Can you imagine how angry the brothers would have been had they known that Joseph was sold but ended up hitting the jackpot – living in Pharoah’s house? The brothers did not realize at that time that Joseph was being shown favor by someone more powerful than they could ever imagine.
Joseph shown favor from the prison warden because of the Lord.
Now of course you know the story could not end there. A woman had to be thrown into the story and cause problems for Joseph. Joseph was “well-built and handsome” the bible states. Joseph’s masters wife could not resist him. She wanted him and was going to have him. But Joseph knew Pharaoh trusted him with everything but his wife. Joseph would not do anything bad to his master.
The wife could not take no for an answer so of course she had to manipulate the situation. The bible does not tell how Joseph reacted when the master found out, was filled with anger and put Joseph in prison. But knowing Joseph’s past evidently he did not speak any harsh words.
But again, Joseph is shown favor by the prison warden because he saw the Lord was with him.
Genesis 39:20b – 23
But while Joseph was there in the prison, 21 the Lord was with him; he showed him kindness and granted him favor in the eyes of the prison warden. 22 So the warden put Joseph in charge of all those held in the prison, and he was made responsible for all that was done there. 23 The warden paid no attention to anything under Joseph’s care, because the Lord was with Joseph and gave him success in whatever he did.
Joseph was not shown favor by a cup-bearer.
Now while he was in prison the cup-bearer and the baker was thrown in prison because Pharoah became angry with them. Not sure if the cup-bearer dropped grape juice on him, or if the baker burned a cake but they were thrown in prison.
One night each of them had a dream, the cup-bearer and the baker. The next morning they both looked sad and Joseph asked why. They told Joseph they both had dreams but no one could tell them what they meant.
Well good thing, Joseph was in prison with them, because he still had the skill of explaining dreams. He told them both what they meant. When he told the cup-bearer his good news, he told him to remember him with Pharoah and have him taken out of prison.
The baker’s dream was not so good. He ends up dying.
In three days just like Joseph said, the dreams came true.
Genesis 40:21-22 (NIV)
21 He restored the chief cup-bearer to his position, so that he once again put the cup into Pharaoh’s hand— 22 but he impaled the chief baker, just as Joseph had said to them in his interpretation.
However, the cup-bearer did not remember Joseph.
But guess what the story does not end there. It is just getting to the best parts. I will save the rest till another day, but I would like to leave these few things with you.
